This is a "threshold" rendering from photo, that I then digitally painted, from 2003. *property of H.A.Irwin,Jr.
This a painting of the Shaolin legend Bodhidharma. It was done in 1996. Painting was done on masonite, whitewashed with "kilz," pencil sketched, then painted with black enamel. It was a fairly large painting, measuring approx. 3'wx5'h. Painting was inspired from one of the same at the Shaolin Temple in Hunan Province, China.

This was my very first digital painting ever. It was done in "Adobe Delux" on my laptop, a HP Pavilion ze4900. I was taught old school, so getting into digital work was still a "taboo" for me you might say lol. It was done in Oct. of 2006 from my bed. I think it took me about 10 hours of actual work, from start to finish. Looks easy and plebeian/primitive I know, but it wasn't, as I'll explain. In Aug. of 2006, I took a nasty fall that resulted in me being paralyzed from head to toe. From Aug. -Oct. I was in the hospital being cared for. It was a nightmare. I was wheel chair bound when I left the hospital. This painting came as a result of determination and the willingness to rise above what had happened to me. And the power that I had and still have is all from God Above. I thank Him every moment of my life. I was a cripple, and am still going through the fire. I could not walk unless assisted at the time, not to mention all my personal needs had to be aided by someone, my daughter Tara, the angel that she truly is. She took care of baths, food, clothes, etc....was humiliating. My hands were still so paralytic that I had to use a "C" class pencil as one of my fingers to use the laptop I was on doing this painting. Left hand held the pencil for the left click with that enormous eraser head, and my right index finger and middle finger did the maneuvering as the brush/pencil. Not completely sure how long this actually took me, wasn't really pleased with it to tell the truth, but I know it was over a few days to complete. Still not complete, imo. A very good artist I know called me "The Crayola Master" when she saw it. Haha! I loved it, and the sweet lady that said it. The work I have done over the years for the most part has been either sold or stolen, which has happened numerous times before, or in 2 of the fires I have been through, in which case I lost just about everything I had, and had to start over. The fall I took did the same thing too, lost my house and a family life of 28 years. Ya see, my wife died in 2004. Seems like everything went to pot when that happened. When I lost my house of 12 years, I also lost 28 years worth of "things" we acquired together, and what we had before we married. At least I was able to save my tools. I am also a builder. Been a carpenter/artist/musician/instrument maker/writer/author/karate student/teacher/weapons maker and child of God... throughout all of my life. But one thing I will always be...a child of Y'ah Weh. Any thing else I could say, I think I will put in the "bio" section of this site. Which needs an update no doubt haha! Thanks for your patience folks. You don't know how much this ole boy appreciates it.
This started off as a pencil sketch. I saw a drawing of a samurai in a white robe similar to this and it sparked this concept. The original drawing had a traditional Chinese bamboo hat on the subjects head, in white robing, and a sword in hand. I used the same posture with my own idea of how I would look in such an attire. The sketch was then scanned to my LT, then downloaded to my drawing board, where I use the "Gimp" for my digital renderings. I also create my own brushes. This is one of many concepts from the original sketch. It was done on 1/12/2010.
